| Domain Name Registrations FAQ's: |
What is a Domain name and why do I need one?
A domain name is the unique name of your website that distinguishes it from the other sites in the Internet. The domain name is the Internet address of your website. It provides a persistent address for your site, even when it is necessary to move from one server to another and switch hosts.
Each website, e-mail account, etc, on the Internet is hosted on at least one computer (referred to as server). Each server has a unique IP address (basically a set of numbers, such as 66.135.36.166). To access a particular Internet service, one can specify its IP address in a web browser; however, because it is difficult to remember numbers, an IP address can be associated with a domain name, such as www.sitegiant.my. Domain names are easier to remember and to associate with a website. Imagine you had to write 64.236.16.20 instead of cnn.com!
|
I purchased my domain name from Sitegiant.my, how do I log into that account?
Login to your control panel by going to http://domain.sitegiant.my. Enter the username and password in the requested fields and click "Login". If you do not have the password for this account, you can request it from support@sitegiant.my.
|
When will my newly registered domain name be accessible?
It takes up to 48 hours for the information about your newly registered domain name to propagate throughout the Internet. After that your account will be accessible using the domain name you have ordered.
|
How do I find out that my domain name points correctly?
In case you have bought your domain name from Sitegiant.my, and it points to an account that you have with us, you can simply try to access your web space by the domain name. If more than 24 hours have passed from the order submission and you are able to open your website, your domain is pointed correctly.
In case the domain name is being transferred from another registrar, or you have changed the DNS servers so that they point to your account with us, you can check if the propagation is over by using the ping utility.
a. If you are using Microsoft Windows operating system, please click the Start button. Then, select the Run tab, and in the space provided type in cmd and click OK. A new window will appear, where you need to type in the following:
ping yourdomain.com
where yourdomain.com is the domain name you wish to host with Sitegiant.my.
If the IP address located in your Welcome Email is present in the output of this command, then the domain name is pointing correctly.
b. In case you are using a PC running UNIX/Linux, please open a console and type in
ping yourdomain.com
Again, the presence of the IP address from the Welcome Email in the output shows that propagation is over.
Please note that if you have just transferred an account from a previous provider, typing in the respective domain name could take you to your previous hosting account. Using the ping utility ensures that this is not the case ¨C it displays the actual address to which your domain name points.

How long does the domain transfer take?
The minimum time for a domain name transfer is 5 business days. We cannot provide an exact time frame, because the procedure depends on the time it takes the owner to confirm the transfer and on the time your current registrar takes to accept or reject the transfer.
|
When is domain name transfer not recommended?
1. In case your domain is registered less than 60 days ago it cannot be transferred.
2. In case your domain name is about to expire in less than 30 days, we recommend that you renew the domain name with your current registrar and not try to transfer it. As the domain transfer procedure may take up to two weeks to be processed, your domain name may get deactivated in the registry, and you may need to pay additional fees to regain control of it.
Once the registration is renewed, you can choose to transfer your domain name.
|
How to check the status of a domain name?
There is a list of possible domain name statuses in logical order - from the time a domain name is registered to no one, through the registered status, expiration and deletion.
You will find this useful when you are willing to transfer a domain name to another registrar, or when you would like to renew or register a domain name.
You may find helpful the following two resources: whois.sc and DNSstuff.com.
A domain name is available when it is not registered by any person or organization.
Active
Domain names may be registered for a period of up to ten years. Even in case of renewal of the domain name the registration period can not be extended to more than ten years. During the period of active registration, the domain name is active, which allows for the data, associated with the domain to be modified (please note that this includes transfers).
Expired
A domain name is in status expired after the expiration date that is visible in the WHOIS information. This may happen if you do not notify us of your willingness to renew the domain name registration or we do not receive the payment, required for the renewal. Shortly after the domain name goes past its expiration date the domain name will be deactivated. All domain services including the web page and email will no longer work. The domain may be renewed during this period and will not be available for registration to the public. A domain name would retain this status for up to 45 days.
Redemption
For approximately 30 days the domain name will be in a redemption (Redemption Grace Period). The domain will still be inactive. The domain may be renewed by its original owner by paying the normal renewal fees and an additional service fee.
Note: The grace period is not guaranteed. The grace period for renewing a domain after it expires is generally between 30-40 days (never longer than 45).
Registry hold
Five day registry hold. The domain name gets listed in an auction, and bidding starts. If there is significant interest in a domain, Enom will use all its resources to secure the domain name. Once secured, the domain name will be re auctioned off with the high bid from the previous auction as the starting bid.
Important: If there is significant interest in the domain then the chances to recover the domain are minimal. If there is no interest in the domain then you may be able to re-register the domain once it becomes available again.
